Donations pour in to help Hope Alliance Shelter
04:15 PM CDT on Friday, May 9, 2008
It will be a brighter Mother's Day at the Hope Alliance Emergency Shelter -- thanks to some generous KVUE viewers.
Two new commercial washing machines are now up and running and the shelter's air conditioning units have been repaired until new ones can be installed.
The donations began pouring in after a KVUE story describing the broken appliances and the hardship it places on the women and children who stay at the shelter.
"It's been unbelievable. Truly, the calls started coming in at 5:20 yesterday," said Patty Conner, Hope Alliance Shelter. "They have not stopped. We had somebody on our door at 8 a.m. this morning; the air conditioners are running and it's cool in here."
The shelter has been at capacity for the past year and a half, housing 35 women and their children who are escaping domestic violence.
The residents are grateful for the donations from the president of the Austin Police Association, Titus Electrical, Air-Co and Lowes.
