Austin voters approved all three propositions to a $344 million school bond. Even though voter turnout was low Saturday, the results for the bond were overwhelming.

“I think we have consistently seen this community come out in support of public schools in AISD,” said AISD Board President Mark Williams.

The money will be split up among Austin schools. $188 million will toward renovations and additions to schools. In part to meet new state standards for math and science classes, but also to combat over-crowding.

"We're busting at the seams," said parent Cathy Bruce Purdy.

Purdy has a son in an Austin high school and pushed for these bond issues to go through. When the results came down it was an emotional victory.

“I'm horribly excited. I think, we keep saying that our kids are our future and if they are then we have to show them that. It's just amazing and wonderful that the community came out in support of this, and said you know what we asked for it. We really need it, we want it, and we're going to show you that we want it, and we're going to vote for it. There's nothing more powerful than that,” said Purdy, through tears.

The bond also allows for Health and Safety renovations like updated cafeteria kitchens, low emissions school buses, and other critical needs.

Funds from the bond are also set to go toward a Performing Arts Center as well as more classrooms and additional land for schools. AISD board officials say the work will begin as early as May and should be completed within two or three years.
