This Mother's Day, while many are celebrating, others are remembering those no longer with us, including the family of a Travis County Sheriff's Deputy who lost his life in the line of duty.

On Mothers' Day, 9-year-old Josh Ruiz made sure to honor his mom.

But he and his brothers wish they could give her what they all want more than anything: another day with their dad.

Deputy Sheriff Keith Ruiz was killed while he and other SWAT team members were serving a narcotics warrant in February of 2001. He was 36 years old.

His wife Bernadette says she tells the kids he was the calm to her storm.

And 7 years later, his family still struggles to put the pieces back together.

While being without her husband is hard, Bernadette says Mother's Day and any other holiday is especially painful.

"You see the commercials you see the stuff in the store the anticipation...you want to be happy for my mom and my sisters and myself but at the same time that void and the hole is there."

When Keith died, his son Matthew was 14 years old, Alex was 5 and Josh just 2.

Josh says growing up without their father is, hard, complicated, and sad.

Today and every day Bernadette and her sons continue to rebuild and keep each other strong.
