Tax-free weekend ahead for "green" products
12:01 PM CDT on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
This Memorial Day weekend, Texas consumers will be able to save a little green by going green.
State lawmakers passed a measure last session to make every Memorial Day weekend a sales tax holiday for energy efficient products.
"Anything we can do to show to so that we're sensitive to doing our part to help clean up the environment is I think a big deal for Texans," said State Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston.
The appliances available tax-free must have the federal "energy star" rating and include:
-- Air conditioners (up to $6,000)
-- Clothes washers
-- Ceiling fans
-- Dehumidifers
-- Dishwashers
-- Compact flourescent lightbulbs
-- Programmable thermostats
-- Refrigerators (up to $2,000)
"If I was planning on buying anything I would wait until that day and get the extra savings, so I think it definitely makes a difference," said Patti Schaub, Austin shopper.
The savings on a $1,700 refrigerator would be around $140.
For the entire weekend, the state is expected to lose anywhere between $2 million and $10 million in sales tax revenue.
"That $10 million is a drop in the bucket when you look at the surplus, the size of the Texas surplus," said Ellis.
Shoppers looking forward to the holiday say the long term energy savings is worth waiting until Memorial day to make their purchases.
"I'm gonna be shopping," Tolvar said.
