Woman injured in Northwest Austin fire
05:47 PM CDT on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
A Northwest Austin woman barely escaped her burning home Tuesday and was listed in critical condition at Brackenridge Hospital.
Firefighters say the fire started just before noon. When they arrived to the home at the corner of Ivy Hills Drive and Rising Hills Drive, a 50-year-old woman -- who neighbors know as Della Demison -- was lying on a chair in the backyard.
Firefighters said she was unconscious and showed clear signs of smoke inhalation around her nose and mouth. They did what they could for her on scene, but had to take her to Brackenridge Hospital for further treatment.
Now that the fire is out, the search for the cause is just heating up.
"Investigators are on scene at this time. They're talking to witnesses. They're talking to the homeowner. They're talking to the firefighters so they can try and find out what started this fire and exactly where it started at," said Dawn Clopton, AFD.
The home is considered a total loss. Damages were estimated at $430,000.
