Texas honors law officers killed in the line of duty
03:58 PM CDT on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Texas law officers who died in the line of duty last year were honored Tuesday morning in North Austin.
Department of Public Safety officials say 25 law officers lost their lives over the past two years in Texas, and friends and family gathered to honor them during a ceremony at the DPS Training Academy.
“We gathered in Austin to honor our law enforcement brothers and sisters who have given their lives while protecting Texas,” said Col. Thomas A. Davis Jr., director of the DPS, in a news release. “Our most recent loss at DPS underscores how dangerous law enforcement can be as a profession. However, our officers are proud to serve the people of the state of Texas.”
Of the officers killed in 2007, five were from Cental Texas, including Trooper Todd Holmes and State Game Warden Justin Hurst -- both from Austin.
It was an emotional ceremony for some of the attendees. Many couldn't hold back their tears as the memorial wreath was laid at the base of the monument by Micheala Burns, widow of Trooper Scott Burns, who was shot to death April 29 during traffic stop in Northeast Texas.
Texas led the nation in law enforcement officer's deaths in 2007, followed by Florida, California and Louisiana.
