Austin office goes paperless
06:57 PM CDT on Friday, May 16, 2008
In just about any work place, it's hard to imagine getting the job done without paperwork. However, that's exactly what one Austin electrical contractor is doing by transferring to a paperless system.
In the field, K.D.R. Electrical Services specializes in commercial and industrial electrical work. Meanwhile, at the office, the work is just starting for Office Manager Amber Smith. Page by page, she scans documents and enters the data into a computer.
The process started a month ago after the company spent $30,000 on new equipment. It will take months to complete, but already Smith has sent a truckload of paper to be recycled.
The documents in a storeroom will also be scanned before the paper is put to good use.
"Not only are we going green, but all of this paper we are getting rid of is going to a recycling program at Reagan High School to help them raise money for their school," Smith said.
KDR Services owner Ken Jahns says the blueprints detailing each job order will still be printed on paper because of their size. But everything else at the office is going green.
"We're recycling all of our paper that we've had sitting here and we're cutting down on the paper we're using and at the same time we're making our office more efficient," said Jahns.
It’s more efficient, cost effective and convenient. Now the next big hurdle is to get field technicians to email their service reports so that the paperwork is erased for good.
