Fire damages home in historic neighborhood
10:31 AM CDT on Thursday, May 22, 2008
A home caught fire in the historic Swede Hill community.
Neighbors called 911 around 5:20 Thursday morning. They noticed flames coming from the roof top of one of the homes on the 1000 block of 14th Street at Waller. When fire fighters arrived they saw flames shooting above the rooftop.
Fire Battalion Chief Mike Frick says flames engulfed the second story and damaged every other part of the home.
Officials say no one was inside when the fire started. Neighbors say it was abandoned while the owners were remodeling. Several of the homes in the Swede Hill community are historic. Fire fighters say the house right next door was marked as an historic landmark, but they are still not sure if the home that caught fire was as well.
Fire fighters had a slight wind to contend with during the fire. Crews say it was blowing embers into the yards of nearby houses. As a precaution extra fire crews were called out. Typically fire officials say there are only 7 engines called out to similar fires, but Thursday morning 9 were called out.
One of the men that lived next door to the house noticed the flames from one of his windows. He says he left his own home when he realized how many embers were falling near his house.
"The house where I live is right next door and there were gusts of winds. You see embers like almost like a giant camp fire...the last thing you want is for the fire to jump to yours or a neighbor's house and start another fire," said Rob Savoie who lives next door to the house that caught fire.
It took about 45 minutes before fire fighters had the flames under control. It's still not known what caused the fire. An investigation is underway.
