Attorney general launches child safety initiative
01:08 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 28, 2008
If your child is kidnapped, their fate could lie in how you, the parent, reacts. Attorney General Greg Abbott has come up with a plan to make sure you're prepared for the worst before it happens.
Abbott and his cyber crime unit handed out free child safety flash drives to parents at the Round Rock Express game Monday. Parents can load the flash drive with key information about their children, like current pictures and their friends' contact information. If their child should ever go missing, parents can just hand the flash drive to police.
Ed Smart, father of Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped in 2002 and found nine months later, accompanied Abbott to the stadium.
"It does happen, and being prepared is critically important," Ed Smart shares his story with parents.
"Giving it to local law enforcement will allow local law enforcement to come up with posters that have the child's picture on it, will be able to connect with the Amber Alert program and provide law enforcement with the tools and information they need to act quickly," Greg Abbott said of the importance of the flash drive.
Abbott will hand out flash drives at events throughout the state this summer. But you don't have to have one to be prepared. The attorney general's office has produced a video showing the information you should store on your computer in case your child is abducted. You can find it at www.texasattorneygeneral.gov.
