WATCH: Waves on Lake Austin spark debate at Austin City Hall
06:17 AM CDT on Wednesday, June 24, 2009
A fiery debate which started on Lake Austin found its way into Austin City Hall Tuesday night.
The Austin Parks and Recreation Board was approached by employees with the Lake Austin Marina who wanted the city to do something about the problems on Lake Austin they claim are being caused by waves from boats passing on the other side of the no wake zone.
Stephen Alexander, manager of the Lake Austin Marina in west Austin approached the Parks and Recreation board for input on ways to cut down on the damage to boats in slips at the marina. Alexander says there's also a potential danger to lake users who get in and out of their boats at the marina dock.
The problem is the fact that Lake Austin is narrow, more like a river than a lake in some parts. There is a no wake zone in front of the marina, but the lake is so narrow that the no wake zone does little to prevent boats docked at the marina from bobbing and banging against each other and the dock.
The Parks and Recreation Board held a public hearing Tuesday evening to receive input.
However at the end of the meeting the Board decided to table the No Wake Zone issue indefinetly because they said the Lake Austin Marina failed to provide sufficient data about accidents and injuries.
