WATCH: 'Person of interest' questioned in deadly construction zone crash
03:08 PM CDT on Wednesday, June 24, 2009
A "person of interest" was questioned Wednesday in connection with the death of a construction worker after a hit and run crash.
It happened at about 1:30 Wednesday morning. Construction workers were at a job site in the 11400 block of South I-35 when investigators say a black SUV veered beyond an area surrounded by traffic cones and struck one of the men. The driver then took off. The victim, identified as Fontino Cortes-Cruz, 35, died at the scene.
Later on, the Hays County Sheriff's Office found a burned dark-colored SUV just outside of Kyle. Detectives were questioning a "person of interest" they say may have been in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
In this latest accident, two lanes of the highway were shut down for repaving. A constable was on hand and had his lights on to alert drivers to the construction. This is Austin's 38th traffic fatality of the year.
Earlier this month, three construction workers died while working on the 21 Rio building in West Campus. The men fell to their deaths when a scaffold gave way and fell from the building's 11th floor.
A fourth man jumped from the scaffold as it started to fall.
He suffered only minor injuries.
