Man charged after wife severely injured in I-35 crash

Austin police have filed intoxication assault and aggravated assault charges against a driver involved in an accident that tied up traffic on Interstate 35 for more than eight hours on Monday.

Luis Alberto Orellana-Sanchez, 27, told police he tried to pass a truck that was towing a trailer when his car hit the back of the trailer and crashed into a concrete dividing wall near 51st Street.
According to his arrest affidavit, Orellana-Sanchez told police he and his wife had been drinking downtown, and he failed a field sobriety test.
His wife was taken to Brackenridge Hospital. She suffered brain swelling and was placed in an induced coma. She remains in critical condition.
