WATCH: Austin sets power consumption record
03:45 PM CDT on Friday, June 26, 2009
It's only the first week of summer, but Austin is already setting power consumption records.
On Wednesday, the city set a record, with more than 2,500 megawatts of power consumed in just one hour.
Numbers like that usually come much later in the summer, but Austin Energy says it can handle the peak demand.
"We have 2700 megawatts of firm generation that is there. We have another 437 mw of wind turbans under contract. So we are in good shape, and the state of Texas is in good shape," says Austin Energy spokesperson Ed Clark.
Some easy ways to keep energy costs down include closing your blinds and doing laundry late in the evening.
You can also save around 10 percent on your annual bill by turning your thermostat up while you're at work.
