07:39 PM CDT on Sunday, June 28, 2009
A house fire in Bastrop County Saturday night kills two people. Witnesses say a couple in their 80s died in the fire.
Bastrop County Sheriff's officials said the fire started around 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the 400 block of FM 969 near Highway 71.
Becky Manor rented a house nearby and was moving furniture in when she saw smoke and heard sirens.
“We were pulling up the driveway and saw tons of fire trucks and didn't know what was going on over there. I didn't know there was a house over there. We heard today somebody had died in the fire,” she said.
The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire and will be back out at the home Monday morning.
