A 20-year old Austin woman remained in jail as of Tuesday night 3-days after she was arrested for leaving her 5-month old baby in a locked car that was not running.

Maria Elena Aguilera Carrillo is charged with Endangering a Child, a state jail felony.

"We hear of these cases sometimes where parents accidentally leave their child in the car, this wasn't the case in this situation," said Corporal Scott Perry with the Austin Police Department.  "She knew the child was in the car, she purposefully left the child in the car so she could do some shopping," Perry added.

Child Abuse detectives say Carrillo went to several different stores in the Norwood Shopping Center in northeast Austin around 7:30 Saturday evening, June 27th.

Corporal Perry told KVUE that through receipts police were able to determine that Carrillo had been shopping for at least 41 minutes while her baby was in the car alone.

Officers also consulted weather experts who told them that the temperature around that time of night on Saturday was still 98-degrees.

A citizen who saw the child in the car called 911.

When responding, officers said the child was in obvious distress.

"As a child who is completely defenseless, strapped in a car seat, unable to hydrate themselves, the only thing this child could do is scream and that's what was happening when the officer got there. The child was screaming and sweating profusely," said Corporal Perry.

"Irresponsible and inexcusable" are how other parents at the Zilker Park playscape reacted when hearing the news of Carrillo's arrest.

"Parents just need to stop and think for a second. I mean it's the same when you turn your back when your child is in the pool. You just don't do it, you keep your eyes on them," said Toni Wakefield, a parent of a 3 1/2 year old who also happens to be a pediatrician.

"My personal opinion is it's pretty much inexcusable. You know to leave a child alone in a car for what 45-minutes in this heat?..I mean you don't do that to pets let alone to children," said Dave Nash a father of three young boys.

The 5-month old was treated at an area hospital for heat-related issues. However, it isn't clear if he's currently in the care of the state or with relatives.

If convicted Carrillo faces up to 2 years in prison.
