Swine flu victim identified
12:35 PM CDT on Tuesday, June 30, 2009
A 49-year old Pflugerville man is now the first person to die in Central Texas from swine flu.
The Austin American Statesman reports his name is Ron Stowe -- a sales and service manager for Wells Fargo. The husband and father of four was airlifted from Scott and White hospital in Round Rock June 14th to Scott and White in Temple. He died Saturday.
It's a tragic case, but not a surprise to health experts.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, close to one million Americans have been affected by the H1N1 virus.
In Texas, 14 people have died -- 127 nationwide.
A vaccine for swine flu is still several months away.
There is a question about what mutations the virus will undergo in that time.
Local doctors say there is still no need to panic. Instead they say practice common sense when it comes to covering coughs and sneezes, wash your hands thoroughly and stay home from work or school if you're sick.
