WATCH: Police suspect alcohol after car crashes into home
06:21 PM CDT on Tuesday, June 30, 2009
A teen driver whose car slammed into a bedroom in Pflugerville Tuesday morning, causing a gas rupture and forcing the residents to evacuate, is expected to face charges.
It happened around 8:15 a.m. Investigators say a 16-year-old driver crashed through a fence and hit the house in the 1100 block of Pitcairn Drive.
Police say they beleive alcohol was a factor, but they still have a lot of questions after the accident. They say the teen driver was unlicensed, uninsured and possibly under the influence.
Patrick Crowley was letting his kids sleep-in before taking them to summer camp when a Cadillac blasted into a bedroom.
"Big, big huge noise -- almost like lightning exploded in my house somewhere," Crowley said.
It's unclear who the car belongs to, but evidence led police to believe alcohol was involved. The driver was treated for minor injuries and the passengers fled the scene.
"I ran outside and saw two men running away," Crowley said. "I 'm very thankful my kids weren't there."
The accident ruptured a gas line, resulting in five homes evacuated and traffic re-routed.
As workers cleaned up the morning mess, police were considering misdemeanor charges and misdemeanor charges only because the driver's a minor.
"We can't take him to central booking where the intoxilyzer is located, because he's a juvenile we can't take him an adult facility," said Jim McLean, Pflugerville PD Asst. Chief.
Police say they're still investigating, so no charges have been filed just yet, but officers say since the driver is a minor, the biggest punishment he can get is probably a fine.
