Mother accused of leaving infant in hot car

During the recent heat wave and record-breaking temperatures, police say a young mother left her baby in her car to go shopping.

It happened before 8 p.m. on Saturday June 27 on Norwood Park Boulevard in Northeast Austin. According to an arrest affidavit, a police officer heard a 5-month-old boy crying through the open sunroof of a parked car. All of the windows were rolled up. According to the National Weather Service, the temperature was 98 degrees outside at the time.
The court documents state the baby had a temperature of 101.5 degrees after being in the car for nearly 45 minutes. He was treated for heat exhaustion but is otherwise OK.
Maria Elena Aguilera Carrillo, 20, the child's mother, is charged with child endangerment.
Her bond was set at $5,000
