126 arrested in Austin in fugitive roundup
02:00 PM CDT on Monday, June 30, 2008
More than 100 people have been arrested in Austin as part of a nationwide crackdown on violent criminals.
Federal and local law enforcement say the targets of the round-up -- Operation Falcon -- are rapists, murderers, gang members, child molesters and other violent offenders.
Operation Falcon stands for: Federal And Local Cops Organized Nationally. Nationwide, the sweep netted close to 18,000. In Central Texas, efforts involving local, state and federal law enforcement resulted in 993 fugitives arrested -- 126 of those were in Austin.
Austin police were heavily involved in the effort, and Chief Art Acevedo says if still on the street, the fugitives would have continued to prey on innocent victims.
Officials say this was the most effective and successful fugitive apprehension effort in the history of the U.S. Marshal's Office.
No officers were seriously injured during the week-long operation.
