WATCH: Travis County officials urge caution with fireworks
06:29 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 1, 2009
Fire officials are warning Central Texans planning to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks not to be tricked by this week's rains.
"The amount of moisture we got recently was welcome," said Travis County Fire Marshal Hershel Lee. "It just won't stay with us long enough to help us in the 4th of July celebrations."
He says despite rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, grass in the area is still dangerously dry and combustible.
"This time of year, with the weather conditions such as they are, small fires get very big very quickly," he said.
Lee says fireworks are legal in most unincorporated areas of Central Texas, but he advises everyone to forget about setting off personal fireworks.
"Our recommendation is you let the professionals do the fireworks. Attend a public display," he said.
Travis, Williamson and several other counties in Central Texas are under a burn ban because of the ongoing drought. Fireworks are not included in the burn bans.
