WATCH: Low water levels affecting business along Lake Travis
10:18 PM CDT on Thursday, July 2, 2009
When news broke this week that there is now only one public boat ramp opened to the public on Lake Travis, it created panic throughout the community fearing the water was unreachable by boat.
Lake Travis businesses who spoke to KVUE want to make it clear that not only is the lake still opened but they can help you and your boat reach it.
"A hundred yards from us, it's 135 feet deep, so there's a lot of water out there. It's just that the lake gets smaller," said Pete Clark, owner of Just for Fun Boat & Watercraft rentals.
Clark told KVUE that business is slightly down however crowds continue to pour in to rent boats and other watercraft.
"With the lake down we've got even more car parking we just have less boat parking," Clark added.
Doug Powell, the owner of the Emerald Point Marina told KVUE that his staff is having to work harder these days because the lake is so low but he says business is actually up for him.
On Tuesday Lake Travis dipped to its lowest in three years. The lake is presently 40-feet low, just inches away from the record low seen in 1984.
The severity of the problem is evident in the exposed rock faces and dirt barges usually submerged.
"It's just getting so low, it's two-feet over a weekend and it's just sad," said Natalie Gentner, who was boating on Lake Travis with friends Thursday afternoon.
Out of the 12-public boat ramps only one remains opened to the public, the boat ramp at Mansfield Park.
Despite low lake levels, lake businesses are counting on thousands to show up for the fireworks show at Carlos & Charlies Friday evening.
"We just want the people to know that although it's tough it's still a good time to come and enjoy Lake Travis," said Pete Clark.
