Man in serious condition after being struck by a bicycle
10:34 PM CDT on Thursday, July 3, 2008
A man walking across the street in central east Austin Wednesday night was hit by a bicycle. Now, that pedestrian is in critical condition at Brackenridge Hospital.
It happened just after 10 p.m. near the corner of Loyola Lane and Manor Road.
Police say a bicyclist was crossing at the intersection of Loyola Lane and Manor Road when he hit a pedestrian who walking outside the crosswalk. Moments later, officers arrived to find the pedestrian unconscious.
Preston Tyree has ridden more than 100,000 miles on his bike without wiping out. When he heard about a bike rider knocking a pedestrian unconscious, he was surprised.
“I've spoken to people out here and no one's ever seen a collision between a pedestrian and a bicycle that resulted in injuries this severe,” he said. “When it comes down to it, we’re all responsible for our own safety.”
Tyree trains cyclists about the rules of the road.
“We train cyclists to get out in the middle of the lane, and that's what the law says, the law says you're to take the lane if it's too narrow to share and in Texas that means 14 feet,” said Tyree.
In Texas, bicyclists have to comply with the same rules of the road as vehicles do.
So far, there is no word on whether any charges have been filed.
