WATCH: Police, fire chiefs push fireworks safety
08:03 PM CDT on Friday, July 3, 2009
Austin's police and fire chiefs say their number one goal for officers and firefighters this 4th of July weekend is keeping you safe.
The message was simple -- if you're caught using illegal fireworks in the city, or even 5,000 feet within the city limits, you will be cited and have to pay a $248 fine.
There are some fireworks that are legal: smoke bombs, wire sparklers, glow worms and snakes, poppers, snapper and trick noise makers.
But just about everything you can purchase at a fireworks stand is illegal.
You can tell you're buying illegal if there's a 1.3 or 1.4 designation on the packaging.
AFD Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr says the current weather conditions make this 4th of july a potentially dangerous and deadly holiday.
"Even though we were blessed to have some rain this week, it really did not make enough of a difference. It's still hot. It's still dry, and it's dangerous. Not only for you personally, in regard to your health and well being, but it can be dangerous for you if you are lighting fireworks or using illegal fireworks anywhere in the dry areas," states Chief Kerr.
Both chiefs urged Austin residents wishing to report illegal fireworks usage to call 3-1-1 and not to call 9-1-1. They say every year the 9-1-1 system is overburdened with calls about illegal fireworks and that could prevent them from responding to a structure or grass fire or some other emergency.
