Thieves steal from NYOS; losses total $100,000

Burglars hit a charter school system for the fourth time, leaving students and teachers to start the school year $100,000 in the hole.
"There's no way to describe how devastating it was," said Chelsea Elliott, a film student. "It was hard to understand that someone would do that to us."
On Saturday, thieves broke into a building at NYOS (Not Your Ordinary School) Charter School in North Austin. Each classroom door was kicked in. Masking tape now covers the damage.
But thieves only stole from one room, and it happens to be the pride of the school.
"All my plans are gone for this year," said Matt Godwin, a film student. "Basically everyone in this school has made a film -- been in a film."
Students in the award-winning film program are now without any cameras or editing equipment. Their projects are all lost. Executive director, Teresa Elliott, showed KVUE a list of missing items totaling more than $30,000. Most of the equipment was purchased with money the students raised.
"It was devastating. It hurt," said Teresa Elliott, NYOS Executive Director.
This is the third theft on this campus since the fall. Another NYOS campus was hit once. Teresa Elliott says the losses total $100,000.
"We're not able to replace the technology at the rate it's being stolen," Teresa Elliott said.
"It makes me so angry and hurt that some people keep breaking in and taking from us," Chelsea Elliott said.
Film students are determined to buy new equipment. They held a fundraising meeting during class on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Elliott has her mind on security.
"I'll be asking the school board for $32,000 to improve security equipment. The unfortunate thing about that is the more money we spend on surveillance and protect what we have is less money that goes into the classroom," Elliott said.
