Part of LBJ ranch opens to public
06:22 PM CDT on Wednesday, August 27, 2008
Lyndon Johnson was born 100 years ago on Wednesday.
The National Park Service marked his centennial by opening a part of the Johnson ranch house to the public for the first time.
During the time he was president, the Johnson family home in Stonewall was known as the Texas White House because LBJ spent about a quarter of his time there.
Wednesday, hundreds of people stood in line for a chance to see his newly refurbished office for the first time.
First daughter Luci Baines Johnson led some of the early tours and joked that the National Park Service had saved every used Kleenex to make sure the office was authentic. So far the office is drawing good reviews.
"I am so happy that this is being kept alive so that other generations can know the Johnsons and know all he did and all she did," said Patsy Chaney, cousin of Lady Bird Johnson.
The remainder of the Johnson home is being refurbished to what it was like during LBJ's term in office. It will open to the public in stages over the next few years.
