New football season brings loads of tailgaters
08:58 PM CDT on Saturday, August 30, 2008
The University of Texas added 10,000 seats to the DKR Memorial Stadium this year, but it still couldn't hold all of the fans. That meant thousands of other fans took the party to the parking lots for tailgating.
Tailgating for a Longhorn home game has its own special twist.
“We were out here Thursday morning at 8 in the morning,” said Longhorn football fan Ana Villalobos.
For some tailgaters it takes hours if not days to get the perfect tailgating set up ready for game day. The fans say it takes preparation.
“You gotta have three good things. You gotta have some really good friends to stay with you even in the heat, lots of beer and a little food every now and then,” said Longhorn football fan Tiny Jackson. "Oh, and you need a TV."
There’s also clothing tailgaters have to worry about. Nearly everybody wears some shade of burnt orange.
“There's so much orange walking around here. I really don't know what happens when people don't wear this color, I don't know why you wouldn't wear this color. It's a great color to wear,” said Longhorn football fan, Kenny White.
Many tailgaters set up at the same parking lot on the same spots for each game. This year, the Texas Facilities Commission is considering a plan that may allow the ultimate tailgaters to reserve spots for the entire season.
