Jury: Laura Hall guilty
09:51 PM CDT on Friday, August 31, 2007
A Travis County jury Friday found Laura Hall guilty on both a felony and misdemeanor charge in connection with the August 2005 murder of Jennifer Cave.
The jury returned a felony conviction for tampering with evidence and a misdemeanor conviction for hindering apprehension.
Prosecutors say Hall helped Colton Pitonyak mutilate Cave's body after her shooting death and then flee to Mexico.
Cave's body was found in Pitonyak's West Campus condo. Pitonyak and Hall were taken into custody several days later on the Texas border after Mexican authorities expelled them from the country.
Jurors had been deliberating the case since Thursday afternoon. They were allowed to consider lesser charges against Hall.
Hall was not taken into custody after the verdict was read.

"There is no doubt that this love and obsession or this dark emotion led Laura Hall to a place, I think, most of us in the room cannot imagine,” said prosecutor Stephanie McFarland during closing arguments. “No doubt, Colton Pitonyak led Laura Hall down the road to Hell, but she went there willingly with him."
Hall’s attorney, Joe James Sawyer, told the jury that his client is only guilty of being obsessed with Pitonyak, a convicted killer.
"Oh yes, she loved him and she did so irrationally,” said Sawyer. “She made choices that if my daughter made, I'd be on my knees, as her father was when he called police and said, ‘My daughter is in Mexico.’ "
Hall did not testify in her own defense.
Sentencing was scheduled to begin Tuesday morning. Hall faces probation to up to 10 years in prison for the felony charge.
Pitonyak was convicted in January 2007 of murder. He is serving a 55 year sentence.
