APD takes lesson from tasing
10:33 PM CDT on Sunday, September 30, 2007
The Austin police department is showcasing dash-cam video from a traffic stop nearly a year ago.
The victim was tasered less than a minute after getting pulled over. Now the department says it hopes to use this video as an example of what not to do.
"Basically he pulled me out of my car, threw my against my car, slammed my car door against me, pushed me toward the back, the next minute, I'm being tasered," said taser victim, Darryl Eugene Snelling.
Snelling was tasered less than a minute after getting pulled over. Now dash-cam video from his traffic stop is part of a training video for Austin police officers.
"In a nutshell, I want everyone to learn from the mistakes of someone else,” said Chief Art Acevedo of the Austin Police Department.
It was Thanksgiving of 2006 when Snelling was driving down Mo-Pac highway when he was pulled over by Austin patrol.
"I was trying to get my license and my registration out of the glove compartment. The next minute, I'm being pulled out of my car by the police officer,” said Snelling.
Just a few seconds later the officer fires his taser gun at Snelling. His mother and cousin were still sitting in the car.
"It's like what did he do? There was no call for that. And he's constantly yelling, 'if you move, I'm gonna do it again, I'm gonna do it again,’” said Myra Snelling, Eugene’s mother.
Chief Acevedo says those actions are unacceptable.
"In circumstances like this, we will hold people accountable and the penalty will be very severe,” said Chief Acevedo.

Officials at the department say there are plans to show this video to other officers on the force as a training tool and a warning.
"Take a real hard look inside of yourself and determine, am I that officer. Am I treating people that way for a minor traffic violation, and if you are please change your behavior,” said Chief Acevedo.
Snelling was arrested after being tasered - however he was released just a few hours later and all charges against him have since been dropped.
There are reports that the officer who tasered him was put on a short term suspension.
