Thousands register to vote in Travis County
06:33 PM CDT on Monday, October 6, 2008
More than 400 Central Texas volunteers stood outside coffee shops, sandwich shops and Blockbuster video stores to register last minute voters before the midnight registration deadline.
"We can register you to vote in less than one minute," said Travis County volunteer coordinator Katherine Haenschen.
In Texas, voters must register by mail or in person. Mail-in registration forms had to be postmarked by Monday, October 6th. Thousands registered in person at dozens of locations across the Austin area.
"Last presidential election, I was under the age of 18, so I'm pretty excited about getting my vote out there," said first-time voter Lane Zieben.
Texans can go online to see whether they are registered to vote at the state election Web site at http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/index.shtml.
Monday only, in-person registration is available at the following locations:
