Thousands register to vote in Travis County

More than 400 Central Texas volunteers stood outside coffee shops, sandwich shops and Blockbuster video stores to register last minute voters before the midnight registration deadline.

"We can register you to vote in less than one minute," said Travis County volunteer coordinator Katherine Haenschen.

In Texas, voters must register by mail or in person. Mail-in registration forms had to be postmarked by Monday, October 6th. Thousands registered in person at dozens of locations across the Austin area.     

"Last presidential election, I was under the age of 18, so I'm pretty excited about getting my vote out there," said first-time voter Lane Zieben.

Texans can go online to see whether they are registered to vote at the state election Web site at http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/index.shtml

Monday only, in-person registration is available at the following locations:

ANY Blockbuster Video in Austin
* ANY Thundercloud Subs in Austin
* Freebird's at Hancock Center, 1000 E 41st St
* Guero's at 1412 S Congress
* Clementine's Coffee at 2200 Manor Rd.
* City Market at 1144 Airport Blvd.
* MT Market at 10901 N. Lamar
* Thunderbird Coffee at 1401 W Koenig Lane
* University Co-Op at 2246 Guadalupe
* Travis County Tax Office at 5501 Airport Blvd.

The Travis County Tax Office will stay open until midnight Monday night to receive last-minute registrations.
