Torchlight parade held on UT campus
10:30 PM CDT on Wednesday, October 8, 2008
A Texas tradition continued on the U.T. campus Wednesday night to support the Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry with Oklahoma.
Among the many Texas football traditions, few are as spirited as the annual Torchlight Parade, which dates back to 1916 and has become as much a part of the Texas/OU rivalry as corn dogs at the Cotton Bowl.
The parade kicked off at 8 p.m. Wednesday evening, as student leaders and spirit organizations marched across campus from Kinsolving Dormitory to the Main Hall for a Texas-sized pep rally. The Longhorn band, cheerleaders and pom squad joined thousands of students to show their support for the Texas football team as it prepares to take on the Sooners on Saturday.
Both teams come in with a top five national ranking. The Longhorns are currently ranked No. 5 in this week’s Associated Press and Coaches polls, Oklahoma is ranked No. 1 in both polls.
Saturday’s game can be seen on KVUE. Coverage begins at 10 a.m. with Texas Tailgaters. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.
