Restaurant owner: Development not fast enough in East Austin
05:38 PM CDT on Wednesday, October 15, 2008
A popular Creole restaurant in East Austin shut down for good, and the owners blame the city. Development on East 11th Street is taking shape but for one business owner it's not fast enough.
Ms. B's Authentic Creole Restaurant has one location in Northwest Austin, but the owners were served a letter terminating their lease at their second location on East 11th Street.
Owner Brenda McGowan was told by her landlord, the Austin Revitalization Authority that she owes about $90,000 in back rent.
"I'm not sure when or if well be able to reopen," McGowan said. "It's really scary because your bottom line is so close missing any days of operation it just makes it that much harder."
McGowan says she is devising a payment plan but blames the ARA saying it has not developed the area quickly enough to draw more customers.
"What we're asking for -- I want to see galleries; I want to see small boutiques; I want to see reasons why people have reason to walk the street," she said.
But the president of the Austin Revitalization Authority disputes that. Byron Marshall says the problem lies more with the business model, and while his organization has bent over backwards to help the restaurant succeed, he believes it's time to part ways.
"If you drive down 11th Street right now, you'll see evidence that there is plenty of private investment along the area," Marshall said. "I f we don't get any rent, it's actually costing us to have somebody in the space. We've explained that, tried to work with them and really wish them well. We're not trying to hurt them -- just disagree it's totally our responsibility."
