Mementos from three space missions find a permanent landing spot at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library and Museum thanks to a legendary Austin couple.

Former Longhorn Football Coach Darrell Royal and his wife, Edith, presented gifts on Monday that they received from astronauts aboard the Apollo moon missions.

The framed items were carried aboard Apollo missions 8, 12 and 16.

The Royals are particularly fond of flags carried to the moon in 1972 by astronaut Charles Duke. A photo shows him trying to flash the hook 'em horns sign while wearing space gloves and gear.

"We traveled down to NASA to see Charlie come home and go to his house and celebrate with him. So that one is really special to us," said Edith Royal, UT Coach Royal's wife.

Originally, the items were supposed to be on loan as part of an exhibit highlighting the American Space Program in the 1960's.

But on Monday the Royals presented the items as a permanent gift to the museum in honor of their close friends, president and Lady Bird Johnson.
