APD helps 911 call taker in need of wheels
06:32 PM CDT on Thursday, October 16, 2008
Austin police have just wrapped up a fundraising campaign to help out one of their own who goes the extra mile to inspire the entire department -- and she does it sitting down.
As a police dispatcher, Tina Pesina puts out Austin’s calls for help.
But Thursday, she was the one who got the call. There was something waiting for her outside APD headquarters. Surrounded by coworkers and friends, Pesina was given a new, $4,000 racing wheelchair.
It was paid for with donations from her co-workers at APD.
“I’m really going to go fast in this one!” said Pesina.
The gift comes after a lot of hard work.
In 1992, Pesina lost her right leg in a car accident. It was just over a year ago she decided to start exercising -- in her chair -- with the APD running team.
“We train over at Auditorium Shores every Tuesday night and when we do drills or run back and forth and it's muddy -- her old chair just wouldn't handle that," said Sgt. Scott Cary, team sponsor.
"She's decided she wants to do this racing and if she wants to go to the next level and do the racing, she has to have the right equipment and this is the first step,” said Kathy Haggerty, president of the Austin Police Women’s Association.
Pesina's coworkers say the fundraising was easy.
"This will help me get more involved, do more the 5k events and get out there and show people that anybody can do it," said Pesina.
