Nearly $2 million raised in Race For The Cure
07:58 PM CST on Sunday, November 1, 2009
Thousands turned out this morning at the Domain in Northwest Austin to help find a cure for breast cancer.
This year's Race For The Cure, the colors pink and white symoblized hope, determination and strength, as the community came together to raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer, celebrate survivors, and honor those who have lost their battle with the disease.
"Everybody is so wonderful, sweet, all the people that come out the money that's raised because the cure is gonna come from Texas, that's the bottom line," said breast cancer survivor Bonnie Towns.
And many of those who've battle breast cancer and won are quick to give encouragement to those who might just be starting the battle against the disease.
"Breast cancer is not a death sentence any longer, it isn't," said survivor Mary Kay Young. "Like I said early detection is the way to go."
This year's event raised close to $2 million.
And organizers know -- every penny means researchers are a step closer to ultimately finding a cure.
