4 teens wanted in Northwest Austin robbery, assault
12:50 PM CST on Friday, November 14, 2008
Austin police are on the lookout for a group of young men they say broke into a Northwest Austin apartment and robbed and assaulted a man.
It happened just at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Woodstone Apartments at Steck Avenue and Mesa Drive near Anderson High School.
Police say four teens shoved their way into an apartment and severely beat a man. Police say no weapons were fired.
The four men held a 21-year-old man and a woman by gunpoint. Police say the man was assaulted and taken to a hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The woman was unharmed.
Police believe the motive was robbery -- the teens took several items.
Police are saying the robbery was not a random event, but rather the result of an ongoing dispute.
"This was not a random home invasion or robbery. This was an ongoing disturbance. There was actually a disturbance earlier in the day between these same groups that spilled over into last night," said Sgt. Richard Stressing, Austin Police Department.
Anderson High School is directly across the street from the apartment complex.
In an e-mail sent out to students and teachers, officials said they are erring on the side of caution and have asked Austin ISD to send extra security personnel. They are also asking students not to go outside for lunch and are asking teachers to limit the number of passes out of the classroom. The school is not under lockdown.
"This crime that occurred last night was not a random crime. It was a targeted crime to a specific individual," Stressing said.
Since this was a robbery involving an ongoing altercation, investigators say they are confident that the robbers will be identified and caught. The robbers are described only as white males in their late teens.
