Who knew you could actually use algebra?

The students used algebra to build dog houses.
Students at AISD's Crockett High School are using math in a very creative way.
Math teacher Shannon Dilly is showing the students how they can use it in everyday life. The class focused on one project: building a doghouse.
"They drew their dogs and then put the measurements on there," Dilly said.
Then, they applied their algebra.
"They give you the front the back of the doghouse and then you find the measurements.. all around - like the area," said Joel Noria, freshman.
Next - they built a model, and from there, the real thing. Learning how to apply the math they've learned is invaluable, but now, there's a price tag on that project.
Twenty-three dog houses are now on sale for $125 each. That means extra money for the next algebra project.
"We hope at the end of the year to create little rockets and blast them off," Dilly said. "They're so proud of what they did and they should be - they did a great job."
Crockett High School says Freescale played a huge part in this project, providing the materials and staffing volunteers to help.
The dog houses are now officially on sale. Call Crockett High School for information on how to purchase one.
