05:02 PM CST on Wednesday, December 3, 2008
Quick actions and proper training by Highland Mall employees are credited with saving an elderly man's life.
Paul Mix, 74, and his wife were taking a routine walk around the mall on November 3 when he had a heart attack.
Wednesday, two members of the mall housekeeping staff and two security guards were honored for their quick action.
An automated external defibrillator was used on Mix. His wife said she is grateful to those who saved her husband's life.
"It was wonderful to have so many people who cared so much. You always hear about the bad an I was tickled to death this is the good," said Dixie Mix, wife.
Highland Mall is among the growing number of local businesses where employees are trained to use the automated external defibrillator.
Austin and Travis County have almost doubled the national cardiac arrest survival rate thanks to the equipment and employee training in public places.
