Trustees urge firing for Katy teacher found with boy

08:01 AM CDT on Thursday, March 22, 2007

By Helen Eriksen / Houston Chronicle

Katy Independent School District trustees proposed Wednesday to terminate the probationary contract of an eighth-grade math teacher who was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a child.

Emily Willis had been employed in the district since Aug. 1 as a teacher at T.H. McDonald Junior High. A Harris County sheriff’s deputy found her parked in her car near Greenhouse Road in the Katy area, allegedly engaging in sex with an eighth grade student on March 3, authorities said.

Willis, 28, was placed on administrative leave without pay after the incident for failing to meet the accepted standards of professional conduct.

Willis can appeal to the commissioner of education.

“She is allowed due process, and she can choose to have a hearing before the school board or before a hearing officer,” said Debbie Harris, the district’s assistant superintendent for human resources.

The student attends the same school where Willis teaches, but district officials did not reveal whether he was one of her students because of privacy restrictions.

School district spokeswoman Kris Taylor said that when Willis was hired her record was clean and she passed a criminal background check.

She was released on $10,000 bail on March 5. Her arraignment is scheduled for April 4.
