HOUSTON-- A Continental Airlines flight from Oklahoma City blew out its landing gear tires and caught fire as it landed at Bush Intercontinental Airport Thursday evening.
Flight 205 was attempting to land on runway 8-Left at 6:09 p.m. when the tires blew and caught fire a Houston Airport System spokesperson told 11 News. Fire crews quickly doused the flames.
And if you've ever wondered what goes on inside airplane during a rough landing, just listen to the passengers of Continental Flight 205.
“It was pretty unnerving,” said Dabny Van Hook. “It seemed like there was a lot of wind today we were getting a pretty rough ride in. The plane was dancing from side to side.”
About 20 minutes before the Boeing 737 landed at Bush Intercontinental passengers say they were told to buckle up because of turbulence.
But, the 113 passengers coming from Oklahoma had no idea they were in for one of the roughest landings of their lives.
“The plane caught a crosswind or something, it came down pretty hard and everything started falling out of the ceilings,” said James Lester of Kingwood.
Lester started snapping pictures with his mobile phone.
The rough landing was enough to wake Andres Diaz up.
“I was actually asleep until the plane started rattling that I woke up,” she said.
It was only after the passengers got out of the plane that they realized they had narrowly escaped disaster.
“What was unusual is that all four tires were blown,” said passenger Don Hill.
Two of the tires caught on fire, pieces of rubber were scattered along the runway .
“I was glad we were on the ground. Nobody was screaming, we were just glad we were on the ground,” said Lester.
The passengers onboard were not injured and all were bussed from the plane to the terminal where they waited almost two hours to get their luggage.
