NCAA Tourney: Bring on the Sweet 16
09:09 AM CDT on Friday, March 28, 2008
From big hits on the football field to the big musical hits of superstars. What was once home to heifers a few weeks ago, is now home of the hardwoods.
You can add another major event to the list at Reliant Stadium.
"This is the beginning of the next generation of the Final Four for the NCAA,” said Shea Guinn, who manages the Reliant Park complex. “Everybody coming here to Reliant Stadium. They are going to be the first to see what the rest of the country will be seeing for the next 20 years."
It is unique. Center court of the South Regional of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is where the 50-yard line should be.
There are additional seats to fill in the gaps. Something else you can't miss is that the court is on stilts.
"They hop up the steps right here and they can go on up. The coach can be up here. It is the coaches’ choice,” said Guinn.
The teams are ready as are the fans.
"Man. I got my tickets,” exclaimed hoops fan Al Luera.
His ducats are unique too. More than 35,000 had been sold on the eve of the first game. There are 7,000 more still to be sold.
Nevertheless, when it comes to the NCAA tourney, it’s not how much you pay for your ticket that determines where you sit. Rather, when you purchased your ticket.
"Seat locations have been assigned by the NCAA according to when the ticket request was received and the seat was paid for,” said Guinn. “So if you are lucky enough to be here, in the front row that seat will cost you a hundred and fifty six dollars."
So what about the upper deck? The building might be tiered, but ticket prices aren't.
It's $156 dollars too for all three games.
For Luera, the event itself is a draw.
He'll be here for all three games, even if his University of Texas Longhorns don't make it to the Elite 8 on Sunday.
"I'm still gonna go. I watch it all the time on TV. I love basketball,” he said.
Organizers think there is an even split between locals and travelers coming here for the hoops. And the reviews are already coming in.
"They said you know we've been to the last 10 Final Fours. They follow the tournament where ever it goes,” said Guinn. “They said this is the best set up they have ever seen in the Final Four."
This year the Final Four is in San Antonio, this is just the South Regional of the tournament. Houston’s turn to host the Big Dance’s championship round comes in 2011.
