A report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture earlier this week shows that at least 73 Houston-area schools received meat from a California-based slaughterhouse that faces a federal probe into allegations of animal cruelty.
On Monday, the USDA released a list of all the school districts and schools across the nation that received the meat. A review of the list by KHOU.com found that at least 73 of the schools or school districts listed are in the Greater Houston area .
The list includes public school districts such as Houston ISD, Pasadena ISD, Cypress Fairbanks ISD, and Alief ISD among others. There are also several charter schools, private schools and special needs schools on the list.
The USDA is investigating the Hallmark Meat Packing Co. for possible violations of laws designed to keep food and animals safe, Texas Department of Agriculture spokesman Bryan Black said.
The probe comes after an undercover investigation by The Humane Society of the United States. Video shows slaughterhouse workers kicking cows, ramming them with forklift blades, jabbing their eyes and shocking them with electricity.
