Alcohol suspected in 2 separate wrecks
07:40 AM CDT on Friday, March 28, 2008
HOUSTON -- Police are investigating two accidents that they believe are alcohol-related.
They happened just as 16 agencies plan on launching a major campaign against drunken driving.
The first accident happened around 10:30 p.m. Thursday when a man lost control of his car while on Cypress North Houston Road near Huffmeister.
He spun out, and another car hit the passenger side. The car kept spinning until it landed in a drainage ditch. The man was taken to the hospital by Life Flight. He's in critical condition. The other driver suffered only minor injuries.
Then just after 1:30 a.m. Friday, a 67-year-old man totaled his classic 1962 Corvette convertible when he lost control on Briar Forest at Gessner.
The car jumped the median and hit a tree, almost splitting in two. The driver was ejected and laying on the ground when the fire department arrived. Police said he would be tested for intoxication.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving says that one person is killed every 30 minutes in the United States at the hands of a drunken driver.
The agencies will announce Friday morning that they are starting what they call an unprecedented campaign against drunk drivers.
Of the top 10 most populous counties in the United States, Harris County has the highest percentage of alcohol-related crashes.
