Truckers pull over to protest high diesel prices
06:51 PM CDT on Tuesday, April 1, 2008
Bob Hartness hauls freight for a living, yet Tuesday he was standing down to stand up against high diesel prices.
“Something's gotta give. Something has to,” Hartness lamented. “I’ve been thinking and my wife is talking me into taking (the truck) home and parking it.”
Hartness is just one of thousands of truckers nationwide who were protesting the high cost of fuel.
That's why on Tuesday he didn't budge.
Even after spending $270 to put diesel in his truck, it was just 70 gallons and not a top off.
Other truckers share Hartness' frustration, but not everyone could afford to sit idle.
“You know your creditors. No one wants to hear your sad story,” said trucker Joe Garza. “Either you pay it or you don't. Your bills I mean.”
It's a high price that affects everyone, one way or the other.
Whether it's fuel for your car or fuel for your body.
In the first three months of 2008, the American Farm Bureau says the average prices of basic foods have gone up about nine percent because of high fuel costs.
A five-pound bag of flour has gone up nearly 70 cents since January. Produce has also spiked nearly 10 percent.
Shoppers know all too well.
“It’s groceries, it's clothes, it's just about everything seems like it's going up,” complained Teresa Brandon.
Hartness knows people are frustrated that's why he and his truck sat on Tuesday.
Just doing nothing may be his best way to say everything.
