Man stabs student over alleged sex assault
12:31 AM CDT on Tuesday, April 29, 2008
HOUSTON -- The father of a student at Wunsche High School has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly stabbed a male student inside the school.
District officials say that the man and his wife were at the school early Monday to tell administrators that their daughter, also a student at the school, was sexually assaulted over the weekend.
“A student, who the parents believed had been present when the alleged assault occurred, entered the lobby area while the parents were there," said Regina Curry, Assistant Superintendent for Communications and Community Relations. “They noticed the student and the dad attacked the student.”
The student, Curry says, was stabbed three times before an officer with the district stepped in to help.
“The campus officer who is stationed behind the counter, in this front desk area, noticed what happened immediately and intervened," Curry said.
The student, 17-year-old Joshua Chapa, was rushed to a hospital in The Woodlands where he is reportedly in good condition said his attorney Fernando Valdes.
Curry says no other students were in lobby at the time of the attack.
“At no point during the time of the incident did this parent, with a knife, enter onto the main campus,” she said.
Word from fellow students and school officials is the young man who was stabbed is going to be all right.
Meanwhile, 11 News has learned the father in custody Ruben Carlos Cuellar-Romo, 54, has criminal history including convictions for misdemeanor theft and a deadly conduct case where a weapon was fired.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault over the weekend of the girl are unclear.
Harris County detectives say the girl left her home Friday night without permission and went to a party.
Police say several people, including the girl, were smoking marijuana.
Police said the girl doesn’t know for sure she was raped, but she does remember a boy taking her into a dark room.
She was found at 2 a.m. Saturday near the North Freeway.
Paramedics say she appeared to be under the influence. She was taken to a hospital for treatment.
“There is at least one other student that is being reported to us that was involved in the incident,” said Curry.
Precinct 4 deputies are investigating the alleged sexual assault.
Meanwhile, parents are being notified about Monday's incident via phone calls and letters which are going home, Curry said.
“If my daughter was raped I’d be very upset about it and I don’t know. Under emotion people do strange things,” said parent Ken Spoleti.
