Remembering a dark day in Houston history
10:50 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 6, 2008
Wednesday marks 30 years since one of Houston’s darkest moments.
We’re talking about the Moody Park Riot.
On Tuesday, the Houston Chapter of the American GI Forum will hold a wreath laying ceremony on the edge of Buffalo Bayou.
The riot began after several Houston police officers were given probation for killing Jose Campos Torres.
He was a young Hispanic Marine who was arrested for causing a disturbance at a bar.
Campos Torres was then severely beaten and thrown into the bayou and drowned.
The GI Forum plans to present a documentary Tuesday night about the Torres case and the judicial system.
It’s called “A Long Journey Toward Justice”.
A showing starts at 7 p.m. at the Latino Learning Center.
That’s located on Polk at Scott.
