Harris Co. to move inmates to Louisiana
12:29 PM CDT on Tuesday, May 6, 2008
HOUSTON -- Harris County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a plan to move an additional 130 inmates to a private prison in Epps, La., in an attempt to ease crowding at the Harris County Jail.
While officials aren’t wholeheartedly behind the move, they say it’s likely the best solution for now.
Currently, there are 600 local inmates already at the facility in Epps.
The county is looking at other facilities in Texas and Louisiana to house up to 1,000 more Harris County inmates.
There are more than 11,000 inmates in the Harris County Jail.
“We’re very close to our capacity,” Capt. John Martin said.
Officials say that number will rise as fast as the mercury this summer.
They said Tuesday they’re either going to have to look for a way to keep people out of jail or look for somewhere else to incarcerate them.
