Web Extra: Is justice for sale in Texas?
03:52 PM CDT on Monday, May 12, 2008
HOUSTON -- We all expect our courts to offer a fair and impartial trial.
It is, after all, one of the basic demands we make of our society in America.
But experts tell the 11 News Defenders the scales of justice in Texas are tipping against you and in favor of big corporations.
Worse? Experts say you may be paying the price with lower safety standards at work.
In fact, some have told us big businesses just got a “Get out of Jail Free” card if they hurt you on the job.
It means if you get injured, you won’t be able to sue -- even if the company that hired you to work put you in danger because of something they did.
“It is frightening and disturbing,” said Alex Winslow of Texas Watch. “They can cut corners, shave safety satandards, and pad their bottom lines in the long run and they will avoid accountablity in case there is an accident.”
And then there is what the Defenders investigation discovered about who may be influencing the judges.
What did they find? Watch the story tonight on 11 News at 10.
