Hempstead cops shoot suspected bank robber

HEMPSTEAD, Texas—Police in Hempstead shot a suspected bank robber Monday.
According to witnesses, the man walked into a Trustmark Bank with a gun around 12 p.m.
He held up the bank and fled the scene in a pickup truck.
Police arrived quickly and chased the suspect at speeds topping 100 miles per hour.
He didn’t get far.
A few blocks from the bank, the cops caught up with the crook and pinned him in at Hempstead City Park.
He crashed into a patrol car, and shots were exchanged.
The suspect was hit, but police were not.
He was taken under guard to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
It was unclear how much money he attempted to take.
Residents of the town – including the sheriff – said it was the first local bank robbery they could remember.
