Storm rattles Walker County town
06:02 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 14, 2008
NEW WAVERlY, Texas -- In New Waverly, the lightning cracked loud enough to scare some people.
Lonnie Adams shot video of the storm as it rolled into the Walker County area.
About the same time, lights in her neighbors’ home started to flicker, and Mary Hargraves heard a roar.
“It felt like everything was going to cave in. It was loud, but it was real quick,” she said.
It was so quick that when she ran back to her bedroom to grab matches for candles, the home caved in on her.
“I was standing right here right in this area over here and then all of a sudden it just come out of nowhere and it just fell it just fell on top of me,” said Hargraves.
Her bedroom ceiling crashed in and missed her by inches.
“I was in shock. It was scary,” she said.
Mary’s husband, Darrell, called an ambulance. He was scared his wife was hurt.
“I made a run down the hallway and she was coming out. I embraced her to make sure she was OK and it took her a little bit to quit crying,” he said.
Mary was fine, but her Cadillac was put out of commission. Her bedroom and bathroom ceilings were also crushed.
It didn’t take crews long to arrive and begin cleaning up the mess that Mother Nature left behind.
