HOUSTON -- Sam Houston High School is a running out of time. The troubled school has underperformed on the state TAKS test for five years now.
So, last week HISD administrators announced a proposal to improve the school. It started with a management shakeup, including the hiring of a new principal.
The district also plans to create a math and science academy for ninth graders.
An idea parent Marina Mendoza only learned about this week. And that is part of the problem.
"I do want the school to succeed. I know there's been a struggle,” said Mendoza. "I'm the PTA president at Sam Houston and I was never informed of any of the plan they have for next year."
HISD superintendent Abe Saavedra suddenly decided Tuesday to delay a board vote on the proposal and instead vote on it Wednesday.
Why?
"We just recently named a new principal for Sam Houston. I thought it would be good opportunity for the principal to review what we have developed for Sam Houston,” the superintendent said.
Students tell us they need the help and teachers are frustrated because they said classes are unruly and morale is low
Saavedra says he wants to raise Sam Houston High to the next level.
Mendoza says as a parent, she just wants to be included in that process.
